Laos day 6: Luang Prabang.

Submitted by maria on Sun, 14/08/2011 - 17:52

We try to get up at dawn to see the monks but we don't have the strength. We have to meet the jumbo jet at 9.30 a.m. so we take the opportunity to go to the morning market to see it and have breakfast.

We bought a mass of pork meat wrapped in an enormous leaf, it was very strong, a boy looks at us with curiosity and we gave it to him. The market is interesting, it has fresh products, flowers, offerings, fish, meat, different types of rice, beetles...

We had breakfast next to the river, what more could you ask for, they are a little slow but this is Laos, you have to have a dose of patience. Waiting at the door of the Guest we meet a couple from Salamanca, Pedro and Emma, who were looking for transport to go to the waterfalls and they sign up with us. The seven of us got on the jumbo jet that we negotiated yesterday (they are tough on haggling).

Our first stop Tat Kuang Si, is located about 30 kilometers from Luang Prabang. Before access there is a small local market. It is a multilevel waterfall forming beautiful limestone terraces where bathing is allowed.

We decided to go up to the main waterfall by a path, which was really fun. Our shoes got stuck in the mud, we were not aware of the amount of water that had fallen the night before and the ground was very slippery, more than one snake hit us.

There are wooden changing tables and we decided to take a bath, we have to be careful with the current because it is strong. This place is beautiful, the contrast of water, stone and jungle makes it absolutely essential.

Near the entrance there are huge cages with Malaysian bears recovered from poachers.

Our second stop is the Tat Sae waterfalls. To get there we have to cross the river in a canoe. The feeling of being in the wooden canoe in the middle of the river surrounded by jungle is indescribable. At the access to the waterfall there are elephants, you can feed them or take a walk in the area. We decided to see the waterfalls and swim, they are lower than the previous ones but the swimming area is bigger. The current is also strong.

We return to Luang Prabang, shower and have dinner in a perpendicular street of the night market, near Sisavong Road. Absolutely essential. Meat and grilled fish. The street is small but mostly filled with Spaniards. Everything is delicious.

Our friends from Salamanca discover us a nearby shop where you can buy some delicious homemade yoghurts also in Sisavong Road.
