Cartagena offers thousands of alternatives to spend the day, from cultural visits to impressive beaches such as Playa Blanca or the Rosario Islands, to taking a mud bath in the Totumo. We decided on the latter option, a mud volcano with medicinal properties.
Today the breakfast on the rooftop plays with the sun. It's 7 o'clock and everything points to it being hot.
We have met in front of the Clock Tower. The bus takes a little more than 45 minutes to reach the volcano. It is halfway between Cartagena and Barranquilla.

It is possible to get there on your own but it is not more expensive than taking a circuit.
All you need is a swimsuit and some flip-flops. The backpacks stay in the bus and it closes until the end of the day and all the travellers are there. Everything is very well organized, the local community is in charge of taking pictures of you (they know the tricks of all the mobiles to take the quick photo app), you have the option to get a massage, they bring you the flip flops and accompany you to the lagoon and if you want they can wash you in the lagoon to get rid of the mud.
The feeling inside the volcano is relaxing, you float without making any effort and the temperature is very pleasant.

After the volcano we have lunch and go to a beach closer to Cartagena and have a good swim. The water is very hot, since a few years ago as a result of El Niño, the water in this area has risen in temperature and is destroying the nearby coral reefs.

For the mobile phone or camera they charge you 5.000 COP, for massage 5.000 COP and for removing the mud in the lake 5.000 COP . There is also a guy to take your flip-flops. We gave him 1,000 COP.
