The island of Tenerife, located in the Canary Islands archipelago, offers travellers a wide range of options.
Los Abrigos natural pools
Beaches, mountains, natural pools, endemic forests, surfing, diving and whale watching are just some of the wonders that the island has to offer. And what can we say about the friendliness of its people and its exquisite gastronomy.

On this occasion we only enjoyed one day in a part of the south of the island which we would like to share with you as it served as a link to the mainland.
We are sure that we will come back to visit the island in more depth.
How to get there
By plane. The island of Tenerife has two main airports, one in the north and one in the south. On this occasion we flew to Tenerife South Airport as it is located closer to the Port of Los Cristianos from where the ferries depart to the western islands, the purpose of this trip.

Tenerife's airports receive national and international flights on a daily basis. In our case we flew direct from Madrid with Iberia, 110€/pax without checking in luggage.
Iberia is currently applying COVID protocol by checking in cabin luggage at zero cost, although it is not compulsory.
Island flights are usually operated by smaller companies such as BINTER.
Views from Montaña Amarilla
By boat. The island of Tenerife has two main ports, The Port de los Cristianos in the south and Santa Cruz de Tenerife in the east of the island.
Ferries departing from the Port of Los Cristianos go to the western Canary Islands, La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro.
South coast
Naviera de Armas and Fred Olsen operate these routes with the exception of El Hierro, which is only operated by Naviera de Armas. Approximate price 52€/ pax/ way with car for non-residents of the Canary Islands.
If your destination is between any of the eastern islands, Fuerteventura, Lanzarote or Las Palmas, you should go to the port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the capital of the island.

Getting around the island
The car is the easiest way to get around the island, it will take a long time to cover the miles, but it is worth the patience required, they never disappoint. We rented a car with the company CICAR.
Fully comprehensive insurance with no excess and no mileage limit. They give you the car with an empty tank and that's how you have to return it. They work very well, new vehicles in very good condition. They have several collection and delivery points, and you can take it to other islands (previous notice to the company), although you must return it to the island of origin.
Breakfast
With the my petrol station app you can quickly and easily find the nearest petrol station at the best price.
Bus. TITSA is the bus and guagua service that connects the whole island.
Taxi. In any town in Tenerife you can use this type of transport, they are white and all of them have a taximeter.

Accommodation
We stayed in the south of the island in the hostel Los Amigos located in La Mareta near the village of Los Abrigos. Double room 40€ for two people with breakfast included.
The treatment was impressive, not only did they share their dinner with us (we arrived at midnight and everything was already closed) but they made us feel at home. We highly recommend it.
Los Amigos Tenerife Hostel
The double room overlooks the pool and has a shared bathroom. It has a kitchen that you can use to prepare whatever you want. The breakfast buffet, with bread, fruit, cereals, coffee, juice, yoghurt, hummus, potatoes, sausage, tomato, oil, jam, butter,...
Gastronomy
Canarian gastronomy is exquisite. The famous potatoes, mojo, fruit or gofio accompany spectacular meat and/or fish dishes.

Travel insurance
We always recommend that you take out insurance before you start your trip. Both Mondo and Iati offer the best conditions on the market.
Since the arrival of Covid-19, it is essential to have travel insurance. In addition to medical assistance, these insurances offer many other coverages that are adapted to each traveller without having to advance money or excesses.
The price varies depending on the coverage and the duration of the trip. For example, insurance to the Canary Islands for three weeks costs around €28 per person with Iati.
What to see in the south of Tenerife
We only spent one day on this wonderful island as it served as a starting point to visit the islands of La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro.
We visited the natural pools of Los Abrigos. They are situated just one kilometre from the village of Los Abrigos and only 500 metres from Los Amigos hostel.
Los Abrigos natural pools
There is a cycle path along the coast that takes you from the beach of La Mareta to the natural pools. The coast is quite steep and small caves are formed which are often inhabited by people without resources. In fact, we witnessed the eviction of some of these caves due to the danger posed by the proximity of the sea.

Mareta beach
The natural pools of Los Abrigos surprised us. The quality of the water, the number of different fish and the underwater arches that connect the different pools. It was beautiful. A stop and a swim is a must.

The Tenerife town of Los Abrigos is a small coastal village ideal for shopping and having a drink.
Very close by, heading south, is the Montaña Amarilla Natural Monument. An imposing volcanic edifice with magnificent views of the town of San Miguel de Abona and the rugged coastline of El Silencio.
Montaña Amarilla
We eat at the Sabor Canario restaurant next to Punta del Callao. The food was spectacular, grilled tuna with mojo and wrinkled potatoes, goat stew with potatoes, beers, homemade pistachio ice cream and homemade quesadilla for 29€. We highly recommend it.

In the afternoon we take a stroll along the beach of Las Americas. A promenade full of hotels, restaurants and bars.
