The island of Tenerife is a natural paradise where you can enjoy beaches, natural pools, volcanoes and nature at any time of the year.

The island offers adventure sports, marine fauna sightings and an endless number of mountain and hiking routes where you can have fun and disconnect.

A few years ago we only visited the south of the island but this time we have had the opportunity to get to know it in more depth. We propose an 8-day route to get to know the most impressive places of this volcanic jewel.

Day 1. Puerto de la Cruz and La Orotava

Day 2. Masca ravine

Day 3. Trekking up the Teide from El Portillo

Day 4. Teide sunrise, Teide National Park

Day 5. Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Teresitas beach, Anaga rural park

Day 6. Anaga Rural Park

Day 7.  Teide viewpoints and Gigantes cliffs

Day 8. Lighthouse of Punta de Teno

How to get there

We took a flight from Madrid to Tenerife North Airport. We flew with IBERIA, direct flight round trip with a checked backpack 311.90€ (2 pax).

Accommodation

This time we stayed in Puerto de la Cruz in the Coral Teide Mar flats. They are simple, very clean and well located, they also have a swimming pool and a buffet breakfast service for 10€/pax (39.60€/night/apartment).

The previous time we stayed in the Hostel los Amigos in the south, very good experience, we told you all about it in this link.

Getting around the island

The car is the easiest way to get around the island.  We rent a car with the company CICAR.

Fully comprehensive insurance with no excess and no mileage limit. They give you the car with an empty tank and that's how you have to return it. They work very well, new vehicles in very good condition. They have several collection and delivery points, and you can take it to other islands (previous notice to the company), although you must return it to the island of origin.

We also use the guaguas or buses, they work very well, have many timetables and are cheap, the company is Titsa.

Gastronomy

Canarian gastronomy is exquisite. The famous potatoes, mojo, fruit and gofio accompany spectacular meat and/or fish dishes.

Rabbit and goat dishes are very typical in Tenerife. We recommend you to visit the Guachinches, especially if you visit the north of the island.

The Guachinches are the typical restaurants of the island, homemade food at a very good price. Originally, these restaurants were only open during the grape harvest, as long as they had home-grown wine to sell. Nowadays, they are open almost all year round. The genuine ones are like small barracks with very austere terraces, although you can also find modern and designer ones.

We recommend the following:

Guachinche los Gómez in La Orotava, the grilled cheese and the ropa vieja are brutal.

Guachinche Casa Goyo in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the cooked octopus is amazing.

Guachinche la Finca near La Victoria, the roast rabbit is delicious, but be careful because you can order half a rabbit instead of a whole one.

On this website you can find more Guachinches.
