Argentina day 8: El Chaltén.

Submitted by maria on Sun, 27/02/2011 - 19:18

We get up early again and spend the next two days in El Chalten, the entrance to Glacier National Park in the northern sector.

We took a van, it works like a bus but makes less stops. The driver is very nice and acts as a tour guide on the way. He stops at the viewpoints and tells us stories.

Patagonia is a very large area of steppe, the pampas as they say here. You can travel hundreds of kilometers and only see guanacos, some gauchos on horseback and a few estancias. In the background the Andes rise imposing. The wide and flowing rivers.

We stop at a viewpoint on Lake Viedma, the views of the Viedma Glacier are spectacular.

We arrive in Chalten three hours later, it is raining. After leaving our backpacks in Pudu Lodge we put on our raincoats and start the trail that goes up to the base of the Fitz Roy or Chaltén hill with 3,400 meters of altitude. An hour and a half later of intense rain makes us return to Chalten. Tomorrow we will try it again, to see if the weather will be with us.
